The EU’s flagship LIFE programme has awarded more than €380 million to 133 new green projects in support of the European Green Deal. The European Commission funding package announced today represents more than half the total investment of €722 million for LIFE projects awarded so far this year. National, regional and local governments, public-private partnerships and civil society organisations contribute the remaining funding.

The funding announced today will go to LIFE projects across Europe in four broad areas: to conserve and restore nature; make better use of the environment and resources; reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and increase climate resilience; and accelerate the transition to clean energy.

Among the 133 LIFE projects to be awarded are €3.6 million to promote ‘the peaceful coexistence of nature and the urban lifestyle’; €10 million for the flagship European Energy Communities Facility (ENERCOM)  to trigger investments in sustainable energy; €9.8 million to pilot zero-carbon sea water-to-fresh water technology; and €6.8 million to protect Europe’s wine and cheese producers from climate change.
