A CINEA session on: Enhancing circularity through waste prevention, repair and re-use: a key priority topic in the new LIFE 2021-2027 was held on 27 October. Its goal was to explore why waste prevention, repair and re-use remain unexploited and what is being done to change this. How the LIFE programme can provide funding for businesses interested in becoming more circular was also under the spotlight. Angelo Salsi, CINEA Head of Department and Aurelio Politano, CINEA project manager were co-chairing while CINEA Director Dirk Beckers intervened.
Also on the 27th, the team behind LIFE URBANGREEN held a roundtable: ‘Strategies and actions for the city of the future’. This event looked at how the project has been able to optimise, improve and communicate the maintenance of green areas while safeguarding ecosystem services. Angelo Salsi was once again on hand to speak during this session.

The European Commission - CINEA stand
Throughout the week, various EU-funded projects, including LIFE, showcased their work at the European Commission - CINEA stand. These included:
Deriving a valuable chemical agent called methylal from landfilled non-recyclable plastic waste (NRPW).
Using mycological resources and management practices to improve the climate change resilience of forests in Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
An innovative and cost-efficient technology for leachate treatment, based on solar evaporation/condensation and forward osmosis.
Developing an innovative solution for recycling primary lithium batteries, in particular lithium-manganese batteries.
A durable, acid-resistant, and robust sewerage system comprising sulphur concrete, instead of water and cement, as the binding agent.
Using organic residues from supermarkets as a resource to produce insect protein from black soldier flies.
Various projects from different EU programmes also featured at the EU stand.
Beyond the EU stand, a number of other LIFE projects were clearly visible at Ecomondo 2021, either by holding their own bespoke sessions or presenting their work to interested parties at their own stand.
Separately, CINEA staff were available for one-to-one meetings on EU funding opportunities, including the current LIFE Calls for proposals.
