Description

On November 15th, 2022, the European Commission adopted the EU Algae initiative, offering an action plan for fostering a robust and sustainable algae industry within the EU. The initiative promotes the use of algae for various applications, ranging from food to medical applications and even CO2 removal. A healthy algae industry in the EU could serve as a model for other industries, inspiring them to adopt regenerative, innovative and socially responsible approaches, making it a promising solution for many sectors.

Indeed, algae mariculture has been shown to contribute to preserving and restoring marine coastal ecosystems, regenerating marine aquaculture, promoting restorative ocean farming, facilitating carbon trading, and numerous other sectors. The Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy Communication, the new Sustainable EU Aquaculture Guidelines, and other initiatives have all recognized this potential.

However, as with any emerging industry, it is critical to understand the potential impacts of algae. This is particularly important because of its potential as a promising solution to many of our societal challenges.

The subject of this call for tenders is to fund a study to better understand and assess the potential impacts and to emphasize opportunities of a developing algae industry. The objective is to ensure that the algae sector develops sustainably by bridging the existing knowledge gaps which have been highlighted in the Algae initiative in order to better contribute to the decarbonisation objectives of the European Green Deal as well as studying the role of algae in sustainable food and feed systems.

Budget available: EUR 800,000
