The Ursa Major 2 project involved public authorities, road administrations and traffic information service providers to ensure coordinated traffic management to achieve high quality traveller information services. Partners from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands worked together to improve cross-border traffic and transport through implementing harmonised and synchronised Intelligent Transport System (ITS) for road applications. The project targeted the deployment of ITS to improve safety and efficiency of freight traffic, mainly along the Rhine-Alpine  Core Network Corridor, linking North Sea ports, the Rhine and Ruhr area, metropolitan areas in southern Germany and in Italy.

The project directly contributed to the provision of enhancement of truck parking services, support for truck navigation services, remove bottlenecks and congestion and safety improvements for freight transport. In addition, Ursa Major 2 contributed to the provision of EU-wide real-time traffic information across borders.

The project improved services for international freight traffic with valuable and reliable information about parking, travel conditions and route recommendations.

The main achievements are the deployment of 1,270 parking spaces equipped with Intelligent Transport Parking services, 301 detection units or 192 Variable Message Signs.

Main benefits along the routes where the Action has been implemented were: better traffic efficiency (reduction of 13% in journey time), 34% less road accidents and reduction of 22% in annual CO2 emissions.
