REACHOUT

Shaping Climate Resilient Cities

H2020-ReachoutProjectAugust
REACHOUT

Adaptation to climate change is nowadays a major challenge for our cities. Understanding, planning and taking actions to current and expected climate change impacts is a real need. The Horizon 2020 EU funded project REACHOUT’s goal is to support European cities to build that needed resilience to climate change adaptation and therefore support the implementation of the EU Green Deal.

REACHOUT project is developing a set of services that are being tested for seven city hubs in the EU. Leaded by Amsterdam (NL), Milano (IT), Athens (GR), Cork (EI), Gdynia (PL), Lillestrøm (NO) and Logroño (ES) the seven city hubs work together following the co-creation of services and activities. Building up on existing experiences and peer-to-peer learning, these seven cities ensure a great involvement of urban authorities, private sector, and civil society through innovative bottom-up interdisciplinary approaches with a final goal of strengthen outreach and upscale the results to many more cities.

One of the last ones to join the testing phase was the Norwegian town of Lillestrøm. The city is working closely with REACHOUT project to implement the municipality’s climate strategy. The municipality is mostly exposed to natural hazards from floods and landslides, especially quick clay slides.

The tools from REACHOUT can be useful to make information about climate risk and climate adaptation accessible to their citizens and other stakeholders, and to help implement climate adaptation more directly into planning and regulation processes. This is the so-called triple A-Toolkit, the services support cities to Analyse hazard, exposure and vulnerability to climate change, formulate Ambitions for climate resilient urban development, and identify, evaluate and select adaptation Actions for implementations.
