Description

While cleaner road vehicles and fuels have become progressively more available, the sector’s impacts on human health, the environment and climate change persist.

A shift towards low- or zero-emission mobility and more sustainable transport modes is needed to meet the EU’s carbon neutrality targets. This requires intensified efforts and investment in research and innovative solutions.

Between 2021 and 2024, the EU has provided over €830 million to research and innovation (R&I) projects working towards a cleaner and more competitive road transport system. The projects, funded under Horizon Europe, are implemented by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
