LIFE ex-post study on 20 soil projects

We depend on soil for food, water, energy and recreation. Soil also protects us from climate change and boosts biodiversity. Yet this precious resource continues to be degraded by human activities.

Soil Report

Many LIFE Programme projects have aimed to protect what lies beneath our feet. LIFE has investigated 20 such projects that were completed between 2012 and 2019.

Several align with the EU soil strategy for 2030, which sets out a framework and concrete measures to protect and restore soils and ensure they are used sustainably.

Others support previous communications, such as the EU Soil Thematic Strategies from 2002 and 2006.

The 20 projects in this 'ex-post study' are grouped into five main topics: agriculture, remediation, land management, urban planning and monitoring.

The findings establish these projects' direct environmental and climate benefits, their policy impacts, relevance to the sector, and sustainability.

There is also information on the projects' economic benefits and, where possible, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
