Following a CEF Energy grant to carry out a study on environmental impact assessments, permitting and technical designs, the new Finland-Sweden electricity PCI (Project of Common Interest) received in 2021 additional EUR 131.3 million of CEF funding to proceed with the construction and commissioning of Aurora Line, also known as 'Third interconnection Finland - Sweden'.
| The transmission system operators (TSOs) Fingrid Oyj (FI) and Svenska kraftnät (SE) are the beneficiaries of this project consisting of a 380 km 400 kV overhead transmission line connecting the two countries and going from the “Messaure” substation in Sweden and the “Pyhänselkä” substation in Finland. The main objective of Aurora Line is to increase the cross-border transmission capacity by 800 MW from Sweden to Finland and 900 MW from Finland to Sweden. |
The construction phase kicked off in 2022 and the project is advancing well. The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, and the line will enter in operation by mid 2026.
In Sweden: construction works are ongoing to build the Isovaara SC substation and the overhead transmission line at both sides of the Tornio-river linking Dockasberg (SE) and Risudden (FI).

| In Finland: works on the transmission line Viitajärvi-Herva and Viitajärvi substation are almost completed while the Viitajärvi substation has been finalised, already energised by two old lines and waiting for the completion of the new ones. |
Once in operation, Aurora Line will strengthen the internal electricity market, increase security of supply and improve RES integration in the Nordic region.
