On 25 January, in the presence of the Latvian Minister for Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis, CEF Energy beneficiary Conexus Baltic Grid hosted the closing event of the Project of Common Interest ‘Enhancement of Latvia – Lithuania Interconnection’ (ELLI), together with the Lithuanian beneficiary Amber Grid. The occasion marked the culmination of the construction works aiming to enhance the capacity of the gas transmission pipelines between the two countries.
The ELLI project, co-funded with more than EUR 5 million under the CEF Energy programme, plays now a crucial role in fostering stability and resilience in the region by ensuring security of energy supply and facilitating a more effective use of the existing Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage (UGS) facility.
Beatrice Coda, who participated in the event representing CINEA said: “This project has been a remarkable journey towards reinforcing the energy infrastructure between Latvia and Lithuania. Today, we celebrate not just the accomplishment of construction works but the realisation of a stronger, more interconnected energy network in the Baltic region. Ensuring a robust energy infrastructure is not only essential to boost economic development but also to face geopolitical uncertainties.”
The two CEF grants awarded for this project have been instrumental in propelling the PCI forward. In particular, the grants contributed to first prepare a feasibility study to analyse the possibility to enhance the interconnection capacity between Latvia and Lithuania and the technical options available, and then to upgrade and reconstruct some gas transmission infrastructures in both countries. As a result, the interconnection capacity between the gas systems of Latvia and Lithuania has been increased up to 130.47 GWh/d in the direction Lithuania-Latvia and up to 119.5 GWh/d in the direction Latvia-Lithuania.
