The JUSTEM final event focused on the pressing need to phase out coal in the transition to a sustainable future. However, it also explored the complexities of this transition, which extended beyond technical reform to address concerns about energy affordability, dependency, and competitiveness. The session emphasised the importance of a holistic approach to ensuring that the transition was just, leaving no one behind, and fostering coordination between EU and national policies. It featured discussions on the promotion of skills, the creation of quality jobs, and the broader social impacts of the transition, particularly in relation to energy poverty and employment.
During the event, research findings, developed tools, and policy recommendations were presented by project participants. These discussions engaged a wide range of stakeholders, including European Commission representatives, policymakers, NGOs, and citizen groups, in tackling the challenges of energy poverty, gender equality, and community participation in the transition process. The event also featured a panel discussion on the intersection of just transition and housing affordability, offering insights into how housing and energy poverty could be addressed within the broader context of a coal-free future.
A networking lunch and opportunities for Q&A allowed further exchange of ideas and fostered collaboration among participants.
