Sustainable transport encompasses modes of transportation that are environmentally friendly and aim to reduce carbon emissions, pollution, and energy consumption. It includes walking, cycling, public transit systems such as buses, trams, and trains, as well as the use of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Clean energy refers to power sources that generate electricity with minimal environmental impact, producing little to no greenhouse gas emissions and thus playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. This category includes renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and tidal power, which harness natural processes to generate energy sustainably. Additionally, emerging technologies like advanced bioenergy and hydrogen fuel cells are expanding the clean energy spectrum. Transitioning to clean energy not only helps protect ecosystems and biodiversity but also promotes energy security and independence. In addition, a fundamental contribution to clean energy is given by energy efficiency to reduce the overall energy consumption and therefore central to achieving the EU’s climate ambition, while enhancing present and future energy security and affordability.

The climate crisis is exerting mounting pressure on environmental stability, with the maritime sector facing a unique set of challenges and responsibilities. Climate patterns are altering due to rising global temperatures, triggering extreme weather events that threaten both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The environment suffers as a result, with the loss of biodiversity, habitat destruction, and increased pollution levels. These changes demand urgent action to preserve the natural world for its intrinsic value and for the essential services it provides to humanity.
