ASSESS

Advanced Skills in Safety, Environment, Security at Sea

ASSESS project

The ASSESS project, co-funded by the EMFF under the Blue Careers in Europe call of 2016, is an education and training project aiming at enhancing the skills and knowledge of employees, young graduates and high school teachers in the field of safety, environment and security at sea. With growing requirements for a sustainable blue economy and evolving regulations, the maritime industry needs up-to-date and skilled professionals. To fulfil this need, the ASSESS project designed and implemented 3 education and training paths:

  1. The Advanced Master – 12 months, with issuance of second level Master’s degree by the University of Trieste (Italy),  targeting European graduate students or working professionals involved in the design and production phases of merchant vessels and offshore plants;
  2. The Upskilling Programme – 6 months, with 2 different curricula: Safety and Security Manager and Environmental Manager, targeting both employed and unemployed professionals who have already developed technical skills and capabilities in maritime safety, the environment and security at sea and want to develop additional expertise;
  3. The Training the Trainers initiative - a 16-hour refresher course for teachers of technical institutes from Italy, Croatia and Slovenia, aiming at providing them with new skills and knowledge in areas such as maritime safety, the environment and security at sea.

All courses have been successfully implemented and about 40 people were trained during the project lifecycle, timely covering important topics and providing the needed skills. Most of participants were already in employment and the courses helped them to fill the skills gap due to the evolving rules and regulations in the maritime sector as well as to the advanced technologies applied on board and onshore.

Taught in English in Trieste, the Advanced Master and the Upskilling Programme included specific study visits in Europe, scholarships and online services.

After the end of the project, 2 summer schools have been organised in 2021 on the most interesting masters’ lectures. Another edition was launched in 2022.

The "training the trainers" programme had a wide success and requests from teachers and the aim is to replicate the initiative. However, additional funds would be required.
