Three Mission Area actions under the Horizon Europe Missions work programme are now open for application.
The actions relate to the adaptation to climate change, healthy oceans, seas and waters, and climate-neutral and smart cities mission areas.
The Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ will restore marine and fresh water ecosystems and biodiversity, prevent and eliminate pollution from ocean, seas and waters, create a sustainable, carbon-neutral and circular Blue Economy. Furthermore, they will develop digital systems that will be used to generate models for a European Digital Twin Ocean and engage and mobilise citizens, especially young generations.
The Mission ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’ will support regions and communities in their journey to adapt to climate change, including the development of risk assessments, pathways and demonstrators of large scale innovative systemic solutions that are economically suitable.
The Mission 'Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities' will provide a strong and direct support to cities that will commit to climate neutrality and enable them to roll out their climate action plans and achieve climate neutrality by 2030, in synergy with significant progress towards zero pollution.

Horizon Europe is the new EU framework programme for research and innovation which succeeds Horizon 2020. Within the clusters of pillar II, it will incorporate research and innovation missions to increase the effectiveness of funding by pursuing clearly defined targets with a concrete impact on citizen’s daily lives.
EU missions are an integral part of the Horizon Europe framework programme. Each mission will operate as a portfolio of actions and will contribute to the goals of the European Green Deal, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.
Info-Days for the EU Missions were held virtually between 18 and 19 January 2022. The Info-Days presented a wide range of new topics for all five missions (Adaptation to Climate Change, Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, A Soil Deal for Europe, Cancer and 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart cities by 2030) which are part of the amended Missions’ Work Programme 2021 under Horizon Europe.
The event provided prospective applicants with specific information on the new Missions’ Work Programme calls, funding opportunities and timelines. The Commission invites researchers and innovators as well as citizens and all interested stakeholders to take part in the five missions.
