This free event hosted by the François Sommer Foundation took place both in-person and online, in French and English, as part of the LIFE European Networks for Private Land Conservation (ENPLC) project.
With conservation easements, landowners take control of the future of their natural areas. It enables them to act voluntarily to protect nature by imposing environmental obligations attached to the property, for up to 99 years.
The legal framework is broad, but the aim is clear: to maintain, conserve, manage or restore biological diversity. For instance, maintain and improve water quality, perpetuate and foster the growth of healthy forest, maintain and improve wildlife habitat and migration corridors or protect a scenic vista.
In 2016, the French law for the reconquest of biodiversity, nature and landscapes created this new legal mechanism (Article L.132-3 of the Environment Code). This event explored the first feedback in France and discussed conservation easements in Europe and across the world.
