An efficient maritime link between Helsinki and Tallinn

The EU is supporting the intermodal maritime-based logistics chain by funding five TWIN-PORT projects to develop the Tallinn to Helsinki maritime link, including the development of the Muuga-Vuosaari shipping route.

They were all supported by the CEF Transport programme, which contributed to improvements in the following areas:

Port infrastructure

This involved the construction of new terminals, new ramps, the lengthening of piers, land reclamation, auto-mooring systems, gate operation systems as well as port reception facilities for sewage.

Connectivity, efficiency and safety

New connection roads (including bridges and tunnels) to the ports, construction of the multimodal transport hubs and gate systems for check-in services and improvements of security systems.

Substantiality

This was achieved by retrofitting a ferry so that it could run by using Liquefied Natural Gas as a fuel and by installing onshore power supply systems on the quays and on vessels.

The projects in Helsinki and Tallinn had the ultimate goal of promoting modal shift from road to short sea shipping as well as improving the environmental performance of maritime transport.
