Offshore renewable energy is among the renewable technologies with the greatest potential to scale up, with offshore wind energy playing a crucial role in meeting the EU’s emissions and fossil-fuel reduction targets for 2030 and the commitment to climate neutrality by 2050.

The EU’s offshore renewable energy strategy seeks an increase of 25 times the current offshore wind energy capacity by 2050. This will require a new wave of construction and significant material resource needs such as steel and difficult to recycle composites.

Innovation is therefore essential to come up with new blade recycling abilities and to increase the resource productivity and overall sustainability of whole offshore wind installations throughout their lifecycle, including operation and decommissioning phases.

By applying circular economy approaches, we can optimise the use of resources, design long lasting, resilient and recyclable materials that ultimately reduce waste generation. Circularity by design is one of the solutions that contribute to achieving EU offshore renewable energy goals as part of a sustainable and circular economy, offering the potential to improve both the environmental performance and the economic competitiveness of the offshore wind energy sector.

EMFF projects that contribute to circularity in the offshore wind energy sector will present their solutions.
