Green Assist: Reducing carbon footprint through biogas desulphurisation

A European-wide research consortium has developed a new technology called BIOGASNET – an innovative solution that offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to current biogas desulphurisation methods. Supported by Green Assist, the consortium aims to move towards a more sustainable energy source and bring this technology to market soon.  

The goal of the BIOGASNET project was to come up with technologies for biogas upgrading that are cost-effective and have a minimal environmental footprint. The project also focused on the commercialisation of BIOGASNET with an emphasis on promoting biogas as a viable and sustainable energy source. In addition, the technology allows to produce valuable by-products (e.g. elemental sulphur and ammonium sulphate), which can be used as nutrient-rich fertilisers. This approach contributes to the circular economy through waste management. 

Seeking to enhance BIOGASNET’s commercial viability, the project team enlisted the expertise of Green Assist and received specialist advisory support between March and May 2024. A qualified expert from the Green Assist Roster of Experts provided the necessary advisory support to take the next step forward.

One of the key contributions from Green Assist involved support on the business modelling, which focused on assessing demand, and evaluating the price and revenue of the project. In addition, market and sector studies were conducted.

At the time, the project had a demonstrated concept and the technical capacity for implementation. The primary need was to fine-tune the business plan, particularly in identifying potential clients and securing financing to scale up production.

While the business plan was well-defined in terms of products and the team, Green Assist made further improvements in market analysis, financing, and customer identification and analysis. 

Dr Óscar J. Prado Rubianes, Director of AERIS technologies, highlighted the benefit of Green Assist’s support, noting: 

‘The collaboration with Green Assist has been crucial to clarify the viability of the BIOGASNET technology. Thanks to this coordinated work, we have been able to develop a roadmap that will allow the Biogasnet consortium to make this innovative technology available to the public.’ 

Green Assist aims to build a pipeline for high-impact green investment projects in sectors related to biodiversity, natural capital and circular economy, as well as in non-environmental sectors.
