CINEA releases new publication highlighting fundamental CEF Energy funding to the Baltic Synchronisation project

Baltic Synchronisation with flags and PL

As the Baltic States prepare to synchronise with the Continental Energy Network (CEN) on 9 February 2025, CINEA has launched a web publication showcasing the pivotal role of CEF Energy funding in making this historic milestone a reality.

Since 2014, the European Commission, through the CEF Energy programme, has invested over €1.2 billion to support the synchronisation effort. The publication highlights how this investment has driven key infrastructure developments, including new interconnections, enhanced grid stability, and advanced energy management technologies.

Key funded actions include the construction of synchronous condensers in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the development of new cross-border transmission lines, and internal network upgrades in the Baltic States and Poland. These improvements have paved the way for a smooth transition from the previous system to the CEN, reinforcing energy security and resilience.

Through a collection of maps showing the evolution of the project through time, readers will see the vast amount of key infrastructure and IT equipment put in place thanks to the programme’s support. The publication also features the voice of the beneficiaries, the remarkable cross-border cooperation among the players involved, and the next steps - as the EU continues supporting several projects beyond the synchronisation.
