Land-based negative emission solutions are included as a mitigation measure in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Negative emission solutions can play an important role in the global efforts to achieve climate targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, there are still significant questions and risks regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of this approach.

The EU-funded LANDMARC project will estimate the climate impact, potential for upscaling, and associated co-benefits and trade-offs of various land-based negative emission solutions, such as net sinks for greenhouse gases in agriculture.

The project will apply earth observation monitoring, a mix of climate, land-use and economic simulation models as well as local and regional stakeholder engagement activities across 16 case studies and five regional platforms.
