CEF Energy has supported 9 smart grid actions with €445 million in EU funding, helping to modernise Europe’s electricity networks and make them more secure, efficient, and flexible. These actions aim to strengthen network security, improve the quality of electricity supply, and ensure seamless coordination between transmission and distribution systems.
Thanks to CEF support, nearly 2,000 km of smart grids have been built, integrating cutting-edge digital technologies that allow for faster and more reliable communication across the network.
So far, the programme has helped deploy 70 smart primary substations, over 5,000 secondary substations, and more than 28,000 digital devices - all working together to create a smarter, more responsive electricity system that can better integrate renewable energy and support the growing demand for electrification across Europe.

The Danube InGrid projects bring together Slovakia and Hungary in a joint effort to modernise and digitalise their electricity networks. Launched four years ago and expanded with a second phase last year, this ambitious PCI aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply in both countries.
By upgrading grid infrastructure, installing advanced communication equipment, and integrating smart technologies, the project supports a more flexible and secure power system. It also fosters cooperation between Slovak and Hungarian grid operators at the transmission and distribution grids.
Danube InGrid not only strengthens cross-border energy interactions, but also paves the way to integrate more renewable energy sources and emerging energy market players.

Gabreta is a joint project by Czechia and Germany to strengthen and digitalise their electricity distribution grids in the border region. It focuses on modernising electrical infrastructure at distribution level, including the deployment of emergency cross-border interconnectors, advanced communication technologies and control applications to improve grid performance.
The primary goal of the project is to enhance grid flexibility and security, improve the quality of electricity supply, and support renewable energy integration. By strengthening the grid in the border region, Gabreta will facilitate the development of e-mobility and create opportunities for new energy market participants, benefiting EU citizens living in that area who will have a more reliable electricity supply and sustainable energy solutions.
EU contribution: €100.4 million
