Complementarity Success Stories

Parallel development of Technologies and Deployment

Some CEF and H2020/Horizon Europe projects work in the same thematic area, while tackling issues from different perspectives. The results can complement each other and advance the overall technology and related infrastructure. Moreover, technologies developed in H2020, such as in the following examples, can complement deployment actions and/or find deployment opportunities under CEF.

Electric vehicles

The NeMo H2020 project developed a pan-European eRoaming network to help electro-mobility providers standardise their services across Europe.

In parallel, the EVA+ CEF project has built a wide network of fast-charging stations in Italy and Austria.

Both projects contributed to making electric cars more attractive for European citizens, deepening market penetration.

Electric public vehicles

ASSURED is an H2020 project aiming to develop and test high-power automatic charging solutions for full-size, urban, heavy-duty applications. It is testing different types of charging solutions, which include pantographs, plug-in and wireless charging.

CEF project 2017-PL-TM-0164-W is developing a zero-emission service network for public transport in Warsaw. It will deploy a bus fleet together with building fast-charging pantograph stations at the extremity of the bus lines and will feature 70 charging locations with 140 charging points in total.

Both projects are focusing efforts on the decarbonisation of urban public transport.

Waterborne

e-Ferry is an H2020 innovation project developing and testing an electric ferry with the world’s largest battery, allowing it to travel further than existing electric ferries before needing to be recharged.

Zero Emission Ferries is a CEF project that converted two existing complex RoPax ships - originally fuelled by heavy oil - to plug-in all electric powered operation using exclusively batteries. The required power provision and charging installations in the ports/ferry terminals were also realised.

Both projects address the need for reducing CO2 emissions and air pollution from waterborne transport by testing and deploying new technological solutions for 100% electrically powered vessels.

Infrastructure / ITS

SAFE STRIP is an infrastructure project developing a micro-sensorial system integrated in road pavement markers to support ITS services (e.g. personalised in-vehicle messages for all road users) and to provide real-time information about pavement condition.

The NordicWay 2 CEF project developed three pilots in Norway, Finland and Sweden to test and evaluate the use of C-ITS services as well as two additional pilots to map the infrastructure readiness for connected and automated driving in Norway, and to test automated driving in snowy and icy arctic conditions in Finland. Both projects contribute to road safety.

Urban mobility

The H2020 CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project is part of the urban mobility CIVITAS portfolio and focuses on innovative urban freight logistics and sustainable mobility in suburban districts in five different city living labs.

The MOBIL.T CEF project aims to create a new innovative and inclusive central ticketing system, common to all mobility operators in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, by harmonising different systems.

Both projects are developing technological solutions that support and facilitate the use of different transport modes in busy urban centres promoting the sustainable and informed use of public transport.
