Description
Achieving sustainability requires major changes in production and consumption, especially to tackle food security, water pollution, and climate change. Both macro- and microalgae offer promising solutions to tackle these challenges through diverse products and ecosystem services.
The EU has recognised this potential, notably in the EU Algae Initiative, which outlines 23 actions to boost algae's role in sustainable development. However, the algae sector currently remains underdeveloped.
This study was commissioned by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) to explore key barriers and opportunities to scaling up algae production and outlines a strategic path to unlock its environmental, social, and economic potential, particularly for Europe’s coastal and rural areas.
Overall, while algae can play a key role in sustainable food systems, aquaculture, climate action, and nutrient recycling, progress depends on coordinated investment, regulation, and industry development.
Detailed findings and recommendations to sustainably boost the EU algae sector are presented in the Work Package reports, and summarised into the Final Report of the study.
