Description

On 3 June 2026, the European Commission published a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in the energy sector, outlining a pathway for a digitally-enabled secure, clean, and competitive energy system. The Roadmap introduces measures to accelerate AI deployment while ensuring that surging energy demand from data centres aligns with security of supply, competitiveness, and EU climate objectives.

Through its flagship R&I programme, Horizon Europe (2021–2027), the EU has allocated approximately EUR 1 billion to research and innovation in energy systems, grids, and storage. Building on successful projects results, the 2026–2027 work programme provides approximately EUR 100 million for advanced smart grid solutions and EUR 75 million for AI energy applications, with a further EUR 190 million supporting digital solutions for renewable technologies, smart buildings, and energy efficiency.
