History of EU transport infrastructure financing

Throughout the years the EU's aim has been to help build a modern integrated transport system to strenghten the continent's global competitiveness and is able to meet the challenges linked to sustainable, smart and inclusive growth.

  1. 2000 > 2006
    TEN-T Programme

    Established by the European Commission to support the construction and upgrade of transport infrastructure across the European Union.

  2. 2007 > 2013
    TEN-T Programme

    Continuation of the TEN-T programme with a larger budget and scope.

    Initial budget of €8 billion for transport

  3. 2014 > 2020
    Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)

    The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key EU funding instrument to promote growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level.

    Initial budget of €26.2 billion for transport

  4. 2021 > 2027
    Connecting Europe Facility (CEF II)

    Continuation of the CEF programme.
