The team behind LIFE CLEANAIRMM has set out to reduce construction and urban green care emissions.

Air pollution is the number one environmental cause of premature death in Europe. And more than 50% of Europe's cities have dirty air. Until recently, efforts to improve air quality have focused on reducing pollution from cars. However, construction machinery is responsible for up to 20% of emissions in urban areas.

Partners in LIFE CLEANAIRMM are testing zero-emission battery-powered units to replace diesel generators on construction sites. Their goal is to reduce such emissions in our cities significantly.

13 construction companies in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland and Estonia are currently using the 'instagrid ONE' portable power system in their everyday work.

'Battery-based mobile power supply improves air quality by enabling emission-free construction. It also reduces noise pollution and enhances human health and life quality,' says LIFE CLEANAIRMM project manager Sebastian Berning.

As the device can be used in outdoor and underground settings or even in remote areas where power is hard to come by, this kind of power has a significant market.

The instagrid solution is expected to replace 6 000 fuel-powered generators on the market by the time the project ends later this year.

Project partners also hope to influence green city decisions across EU urban areas.

LIFE CLEANAIRMM supports the EU's Clean Energy Package for all Europeans, and it contributes to the EU's 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets
