On 26 November 2019, the European Commission organised a webinar for communication experts involved in projects funded through the LIFE programme. The idea: to remind them about the formal communication requirements, share best practices from the LIFE community and give some insights into programme-level communications.

All LIFE projects have to produce a website, notice boards, a layman’s report and an after-LIFE plan, use the LIFE and Natura 2000 logos, where appropriate, and carry out networking.

The best projects go beyond these basic requirements, though. We heard from the Clean Sea LIFE, LIFE Lynx and LIFE Wzrost projects how to successfully increase your reach with creative and innovative ways of communicating. This is very important for encouraging others to take up projects’ results and to inform policy-makers at local, regional and EU level of the best practices out there.

Do you want to achieve this, too? The best way is to be strategic and selective. You can’t reach everyone so pick a target audience and tailor content for it. Link communications about the project to the hot topics you’re addressing and make them easy to understand and relevant to daily life.

Visuals such as photos, videos, infographics and comics are highly effective. Work with the media (especially local and regional) and use local heroes in communications. With these tips and more, you can build your own brand and promote your work effectively.
