Second phase of EU4Ocean kicks off to put ocean literacy high on political agenda

EU4Ocean launch

The European Union is committed to promote ocean literacy and an ocean literate society by granting support to the continuation of the EU4Ocean Coalition. The second phase of the EU4Ocean Coalition has just kicked off today, following an invitation to tender launched by CINEA in September 2022.

EU4Ocean connects diverse organisations, projects and people that contribute to ocean literacy and the sustainable management of the ocean. With the support of the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, this bottom-up initiative aims at uniting the voices of Europeans to make the ocean matter to everyone.

The overall aim of this new service contract is to support the continuation of the established EU4Ocean coalition to contribute to change people’s mindsets to deliver on the European Green deal objective of protecting Europe’s seas and oceans.

This coalition will keep:

  • Contributing to raise awareness and engage all parties involved in the sustainable management of our ocean and seas;
  • Helping members to become ocean advocates in their own field as well as agents of transition supporting changes in perception, values, attitudes and behaviour towards more sustainable practices and management of the ocean;
  • Putting ocean literacy high on the policy agenda, also contributing to the implementation of the EU marine and maritime policies and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda 2030 (in particular the SDG 14 Life below water).

Who are the partners?

ACTeon (France) will keep being the coordinator. The other partners are: Seascape Belgium (Secretariat of the European Marine Observation and Data Network – EMODnet, and the European Atlas of the Seas), Youth and Environment Europe (YEE), the European Marine Science Educator Association (EMSEA), the National Sea Centre And Aquarium Nausicaá (NAUSICAA), Ciência Viva (CV), REVOLVE and Farah Yasmin Obaidullah (the Netherlands, freelance campaigner, founder & director of Women4Oceans).

The new consortium is bringing networks upfront for managing the three communities (platform, youth, schools), and is strengthening its communication capacities. In this new phase, the coalition will bring ocean literacy to networks and organisations beyond the current community members and go beyond EU borders.
