On 13 September 2024, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited the demonstration area of the NEBourhood project in Neuperlach, Munich.

Creating NEBourhoods Together" is one of the six lighthouse demonstrators of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) funded by the EU to address the grand challenges of climate, environment and health.

The aim is to transform urban neighbourhoods by co-creating more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful living environments and to inspire other neighbourhoods across the EU.

In Munich-Neuperlach, one of Europe's largest post-war urban expansion areas, NEBourhoods, together with citizens and stakeholders from culture, science and business, is implementing ten NEB actions from all fields of urban development: From circular construction and redesign of residential and commercial buildings, innovative forms of mobility and energy communities, biodiversity and green space concepts to nutrition and youth culture.

The encouragement of entrepreneurial thinking and action and the practical implementation in co-creative processes supports the formation of sustainable neighbourhoods in liveable, inclusive and beautiful cities of the future.

“Creating NEBourhoods Together is a great project. The collaboration is extraordinary, not only with the city, but also with the university and entrepreneurs and, above all, with many, many young people who have great ideas. And so something is growing here from the bottom-up that not only brings beauty, but also functionality. But very importantly, sustainability and more social interaction,”  expressed Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission during her visit

Today, the Munich district of Neuperlach with its ca. 65 000 inhabitants, is faced with significant social, urban development and construction-related challenges. With numerous residential and office buildings from the 1960s - 1980s in need of renovation, neglected open spaces and a high unemployment rate compared with the city as a whole, Neuperlach is typical of many European neighbourhoods. In an iterative, co-creative process, solutions are linked with the requirements and potential of on site.

Since spring 2023, functioning prototypes are jointly developed to visibly change the public space. They show new ways in which environmentally friendly and sustainable living and economic activity is possible in the neighbourhood.
