Last week, in the slipstream of the 3rd international CCUS FORUM in Aalborg, Denmark, the official opening of the ConsenCUS demonstration plant took place on the 27th and 28th of November 2023. The demonstration plant that was designed, engineered, constructed in the last 2,5 years of the project was inaugurated by a very special delegation. His royal highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, EU-Commissioner for Energy, Ms. Kadri Simson, and Danish minister of Energy, Climate and Utilities, Mr. Lars Aagaard inaugurated the demonstration plant in a dedicated ceremony.

ConsenCUS, is a 4-year innovation and demonstration EU funded Horizon2020 project which started in 2021 and involves 19 industrial and academic partners from seven countries working on solutions to eliminate industries’ CO2 emissions. Within the field of Carbon Capture Utilisation Storage, the project is using a new technique where carbon emissions from hard-to-abate sectors can be captured, using only electricity. It combines an electrochemical capture and regeneration unit where CO2 is separated from industrial flue gases. In a second unit the CO2 is converted into useful chemicals such as formate and formic acid. The use of renewable electricity therefore makes it possible to reduce the footprint of the capture and conversion processes.
