Inauguration of a hydrogen refuelling station in London

Mehrlin project London

The mayor of London together with Transport for London (TfL), EU and stakeholder representatives participated in the  launch today a fleet of double decker hydrogen-fueled buses and inaugurated the matching refuelling station.

The London Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS), which is located in Perivale (west London), was built thanks to a €600,000 contribution from the EU's CEF Transport Programme as part of the MEHRLIN (Models for Economic Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure) project, which will support the deployment of 7 such stations across Europe. The station is designed to supply only buses, although it can potentially also be used to refuel other heavy duty vehicles.

The 20 new fuel cell buses have been purchased with support of the JIVE initiative (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe Action) managed by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU). Four of these buses have been already delivered and will perform regular urban transport services.

The new hydrogen fuel cell double decker buses will reduce TfL’s carbon footprint and further reduce harmful emissions to help ensure Londoners breathe cleaner air.
