Inauguration of the EU-funded bridge between Hungary and Slovakia

The Komarom-Komarno bridge between Hungary and Slovakia

The Komarom-Komarno bridge between Hungary and Slovakia has been officially opened by the prime Ministers of Hungary and Slovakia to vehicle traffic today, following three years of work for a total cost of over €117 million with an EU contribution from the CEF Transport Programme of just over €100 million (85% of the total costs).

The new two-lane, 600 metre long cable-stayed cross-border road bridge (including access roads and two bicycle lanes) links the Hungarian port of Komárom and the Slovak port of Komárno, on the Danube river. The new crossing removes a crucial bottleneck on the Rhine-Danube TEN-T Corridor caused by the existing Erzsébet Bridge. This bridge does not allow the circulation of vehicles heavier than 20 tonnes. Due to this restriction, heavy goods vehicles have faced limitations in their travels in the area.

Today’s inauguration brings another key piece of infrastructure supported by the EU into usage, alleviating congestion, improving safety and providing additional capacity to all users.
