The STARGATE project funded under the first European Green Deal call kicks off today with the official launch at the Brussels Airport in the presence of the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Brussels Airport Company's CEO Arnaud Feis, and CINEA's director Dirk Beckers. The event is livestreamed at 11:00 am CET.

In December 2019, the European Commission launched the European Green Deal with the overarching goal to achieve climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. The first European Green Deal call made available € 1 billion of funding for research and innovation actions under the Horizon 2020 programme, of which €100 million available for green ports and airports projects (LC-GD-5-1-2020). STARGATE is one of the awarded projects with around € 24.8 million of EU funding.

Dirk Beckers said: "The STARGATE project and its fellow EU airport projects are the « runway » for European aviation to take off towards climate-neutrality, along with other Green Deal initiatives upcoming on cleaner airplanes and air traffic management. We count on lighthouse projects such as STARGATE to show the way towards a novel economy and inspire other actors and other sectors".

STARGATE is a significant research and innovation project bringing together a number of major players from the sector. It is expected to inspire and transform the sector, and to function as a testbed for airports in other EU countries.

STARGATE is one of three Green Deal airports projects, the others being the OLGA (Paris) and TULIPS (Amsterdam) projects.
