CEF Energy: the Borský Svätý Jur substation celebrates its commissioning

ACON event - Feb 2023

On 9 February 2023, the commissioning of the new 110/22 kV Borský Svätý Jur substation took place in Slovakia. The event gathered representatives from the Slovak government, as the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, as well as members of ZSD, Eg.D (project beneficiaries) boards and other organisations such as ZSE and EON, as well as project implementers.

The commissioning event was an important milestone for the project and, more specifically, for the region as this substation will significantly improve the security of supply and the regional quality of service increasing the cross-border capacity at the distribution level of the Slovak and Czech grids. In addition, Borský Svätý Jur substation is equipped with cutting edge smart technologies, which will support the integration of RES and electrical vehicles.

Our colleague from CINEA Ona KOSTINAITE-GRINKEVICIENE participated in the event and said: “The ongoing energy crisis shows the importance of the European solidarity in energy. Cross-border energy flows and energy infrastructures which serve more than one country are key components. The ACON project shows that through support from CEF Energy we can boost such key infrastructure projects. We welcome the completion of Borský Svätý Jur substation, which is an important milestone in the implementation of the ACON project and strengthens regional energy security in the Záhorie region, as well as neighbouring regions.”

Background

The construction of the Borský Svätý Jur substation was conducted as part of the ACON Smart Grids PCI (Project of Common Interest), which includes a large-scale implementation of smart technologies, resulting in the most modern 110/22 kV remote-controlled substation in Slovakia.

The ACON PCI is co-funded by CEF Energy with over EUR 91 million and aims to foster the integration of the Czech and the Slovak electricity markets and ensure adequate quality, safety and reliability of electricity supply.

The EU funding supports the modernisation and improvement of the distribution grid's efficiency at different locations in the Czech and Slovak territories, from construction of overhead lines, underground cables, primary and secondary substations and cross-border interconnections, to installation of smart elements, new communication system and an integrated IT solution (software and hardware).
