Description
Pastoralism with shepherdess, shepherd and dog is probably one of the oldest forms of agriculture. However, in recent decades, it has slowly lost its importance in the German-speaking region of the Alps. Now pastoralism is gradually being brought back, as shepherding is not only a form of livestock protection, but also brings numerous benefits for farm animals and the biodiversity of alpine pastures. Shepherding is characterised not only by a close bond with their own animals, but also by a broad view of the entire ecosystem.
Pastoralism and its revival also play a central role in the LIFEstockProtect project. In this conference, the participants will gain exciting insights into the profession as well as the challenges and the future of shepherding in Austria, Germany and Italy through presentations of four shepherdesses from the project region.
You will learn why a young art student decided to become a shepherdess, gain insights into transhumance and understand how protection against large carnivores works effectively. You will also be able to ask each speaker questions in English, Italian or German.
