The fifth webinar in the LIFE co-funded Renewables Grid Initiative’s (RGI) Nature Inclusive Design (NID) series spotlighted the new LIFE project, NID4BirdLIFE, which aimed to support the black-legged kittiwake and other seabirds through the integration of bird-focused NID solutions at the Princess Elisabeth Energy Island in Belgium. As offshore renewable energy infrastructure rapidly expanded to meet the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate objectives, this project highlighted the potential to simultaneously enhance marine biodiversity. While existing NID efforts mainly addressed underwater habitats, NID4BirdLIFE shifted attention to above-water species by developing ecological design measures that could be incorporated into offshore energy projects.
The webinar featured insights from key experts involved in the project and discussed how this initiative conceptualised, tested, and implemented practical solutions to create safer and more supportive environments for seabirds like the kittiwake.
