NID4BirdLIFE: Nature-Inclusive Design solution to support the Black-legged Kittiwake in Belgium

The NID4BirdLIFE webinar, held on 20 May 2025, will focus on Nature-Inclusive Design solutions to support the black-legged kittiwake at Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Energy Island.

The fifth webinar in the LIFE co-funded Renewables Grid Initiative’s (RGI) Nature Inclusive Design (NID) series spotlights the new LIFE project, NID4BirdLIFE, which aims to support the Black-legged Kittiwake and other seabirds through the integration of bird-focused NID solutions at the Princess Elisabeth Energy Island in Belgium. As offshore renewable energy infrastructure rapidly expands to meet the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate objectives, this project highlights the potential to simultaneously enhance marine biodiversity. While existing NID efforts mainly address underwater habitats, NID4BirdLIFE shifts attention to above-water species by developing ecological design measures that can be incorporated into offshore energy projects.

The webinar will feature insights from key experts involved in the project and will discuss how this initiative conceptualises, tests and implements practical solutions to create safer and more supportive environments for seabirds like the kittiwake.
