Construction and demolition waste (CDW) significantly impacted the environment, contributing to 5-12% of national GHG emissions and almost 40% of the EU’s waste. The LIFE Programme, alongside other EU-funded projects, supported the transition to higher-quality recycling and re-use to meet climate neutrality goals and reduce emissions by up to 2%.
The networking meeting, comprised of two half-day online sessions, included a presentation of key project results from the participating projects, as well as discussions on current challenges and best practices in waste prevention, re-use, and high-quality recycling. Participants explored technical, financial, and regulatory solutions to enhance circularity in the CDW sector.
This discussion aims to inform the upcoming European Commission report to the European Parliament and Council on the feasibility of the potential setting of targets for CDW and its material-specific fractions to be prepared for reuse and recycled.
Participants included 30-60 representatives from EU-funded projects, European Commission officials from CINEA and the Directorate-General for Environment, and stakeholders from Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
