Since 2021, the LIFE SOS Crau Grasshopper project has worked to protect the Crau Plain Grasshopper (Prionotropis rhodanica), a rare and threatened insect endemic to the unique dry grasslands of the Crau plain in southern France, known as the ‘Coussoul’. To strengthen this species’ population, the project has improved its habitat through grazing management, reduced predation by insectivorous birds, enhanced captive breeding success, and launched a reintroduction programme.
The symposium, ‘SOS insects: reintroduction and conservation. What are the challenges and how to address them? From the Crau Plain Grasshopper to endangered insects in Europe and the Mediterranean’, organised to mark the project’s conclusion, will provide an opportunity to share knowledge and identify gaps in all steps required for insect reintroduction, from threat analysis to habitat management.
The seminar is aimed at researchers, conservationists, land managers, farmers, zoo curators and anyone involved in biodiversity conservation or species reintroduction.
