LIFE Platform Meeting: Meeting the challenges of the Nature Restoration Regulation in the marine environment

The event will take place from 9 to 11 June 2026 in Valencia, Spain, focusing on the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation in the marine environment, highlighting how the LIFE and other EU-funded projects contribute to these efforts.

  • Expert meetings

The meeting will focus on supporting the implementation of the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), which sets ambitious targets for restoring marine ecosystems across the EU. With Member States required to identify restoration needs and develop national restoration plans by 2027, the event will provide a platform to exchange knowledge, tools and practical solutions. It will be hosted by the Biodiversity Foundation (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge), combined with the closing conference of the project LIFE INTEMARES

The following key topics will be addressed:

  • The Nature Restoration Regulation. Showcasing support tools to assist the development and implementation of National Restoraton Regulation Plans.

  • Active restoration. Exploring current methods and innovations in restoring key marine habitats from the shoreline to the deep sea.

  • Passive restoration. Demonstrating essential actions required to identify and remove the pressures and threats operating in the marine environment, and links with the Marine Spatial Planning Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

  • Habitats for species. Restoration of habitats of highly mobile marine animals (whales, marine turtles, sharks, seabirds), including their connectivity and enhancing cross-border cooperation.

The event will feature presentations, Q&A sessions, breakout discussions and an interactive “knowledge market”, offering participants opportunities for peer learning and exchange.

Registration is open up to 11 May 2026, with an Early Bird deadline of 1 April 2026, which guarantees a place on the field trip (first-come, first-served basis, with a waiting list)..

When registering, you can download the draft agenda, which will give you an idea of the format of the event and the speakers/projects participating. A Practical information & visitors package will be shared with registered participants in April.
