
The WHEEL project is an innovative floating wind technology designed for deep-water locations. It aims to reduce costs, lower the carbon footprint, and support the large-scale deployment of floating offshore wind structures. The project also addresses key challenges related to scalability, port infrastructure, sustainability, and circularity. The consortium brings together leading European companies and research institutions with extensive experience in renewable energy and the marine sector to demonstrate the benefits and commercial potential of this technology.
GOALS AND RESULTS
The overall objective of the WHEEL project is to fully demonstrate and advance a revolutionary floating wind technology to a pre-commercial Technology Readiness Level (TRL).

Development and demonstration required to reach the targeted TRL will be achieved through the design, installation, certification, and testing of a fully operational 6 MW pilot unit. This pilot will showcase the key advantages of the WHEEL technology for the floating wind industry. It will be installed in a deep-water site at the PLOCAN testing area (Canary Islands, Spain) and monitored over a sufficient period to support the technology’s commercialisation and bankability.
The multidisciplinary team of the consortium combines complementary expertise to deliver a full demonstration of this innovative technology. Together, they cover all key areas of floating wind systems to achieve the project’s ambitious objectives.
