The Smart Islands Energy System (SMILE) project aims at demonstrating different innovative technological and non-technological solutions adapted to local circumstances in large-scale smart grid demonstration projects in the Orkneys (Scotland), Samsø (Denmark) and Madeira (Portugal) islands with the final objective of paving the way for the introduction of innovative solutions in the market in the near future.
Currently, the three demonstrators are testing different combinations of technological solutions according to local specificities and conditions as well as the existing infrastructure and all value chain actors needed to efficiently implement the pilots involved. The technological solutions include the integration of different battery technologies, power to heat, electric vehicles (both cars and boats) and smart integration of grid users from transport and mobility, aggregator approach to demand side management (DSM) and predictive algorithms.
