The SCORE project is featured in the recently published “Sea’ties Regional Report – Adaptating Coastal Cities and Territories to Sea Level Rise in the Mediterranean Region, Challenges and Best Practices”.
The project and its Coastal Cities Living Labs (CCLLs) are one of the two case studies presented in the report, which is published with the support of the City of Marseille, Plan Bleu and MedECC.
The publication will be presented on 12 November at 11:15 (UTC+2) during the COP27, both online and at the Mediterranean Pavilion in the session “Coastal adaptation across the Mediterranean: solutions driven by cities networks”.
Based on the alarming conclusions of the latest scientific work on climate issues, this event aims to mobilise networks of actors involved in the adaptation of coastal cities in the Mediterranean basin.
Sea level rise is a particularly important issue for the Mediterranean basin, as well as coastal cities across the world, which includes CCLLs involved in the SCORE project. It requires that all stakeholders work together and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies at regional and local levels.
Coastal City Living Labs (CCLLs) are one of the main concepts behind SCORE project.
Aimed at increasing climate resilience in European coastal cities, has joined forces with ten European cities with which it is establishing a network of coastal city ‘living labs’ involving citizens in providing prototype coastal city early-warning systems.
The Coastal City Living Labs enable citizens and stakeholders to co-create and co-design the solutions with scientists, researchers and engineers. They combine ecosystem-based approaches (EBAs) with smart technologies (e.g. sensors, digital twin solutions) under a living lab methodology. They will learn from each other, ensuring engagement, empowerment and learning throughout the process.
The ten coastal cities involved in the network are: Barcelona (Spain), Basque Country (Spain), Benidorm (Spain), Dublin (Ireland), Gdansk (Poland), Massa (Italy), Oeiras (Portugal), Piran (Slovenia), Samsun (Turkey), and Sligo (Ireland).
The establishment of the CCLLs is crucial for the project to achieve its main objective of designing, developing, monitoring and validating robust adaptation measures in coastal and low-lying areas to protect them from increasing climate and sea level risks, including coastal flooding and erosion.
Now that climate change is a reality for European coastal cities, it is urgent to address the raise of extreme weather events, coastal erosion and sea-level rise.
Research and science could help in predicting these complex phenomena, and advance in progressing in data acquisition, forecasting, and understanding of the potential risks and impacts for real scenario interventions.
