Making European skies safer and more efficient

Deploying the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) Programme

This project contributes to the achievement of the “Single European Sky” objectives and the overall social-economic benefits expected from AIR Traffic Management (ATM) modernisation, supporting European Green Deal and Sustainable objectives and Smart Mobility Strategy.

The project includes 58 implementing projects involving 47 Beneficiaries within 19 Member States and 4 Third Countries.

The implementing projects contribute to the deployment of five ATM functionalities:

  1. Extended AMAN and PBN in high density TMA - covering the development and implementation of fuel efficient and environmentally friendly procedures for flight arrival and departure;
  2. Airport Integration and Throughput - facilitating the provision of approach and aerodrome control services by improving runway safety and throughput, enhancing taxi integration and safety and reducing hazardous situations on the runway;
  3. Flexible ASM and Free Route - Combining operation of Flexible Airspace Management and Free Route so as to enable airspace users to fly as closely as possible to their preferred trajectory, allowing for a reduction of flight times and significant savings in terms of CO2 emissions.
  4. Network Collaborative Management- improving the European ATM network performance, notably capacity and flight efficiency through exchange, modification and management of trajectory information.
  5. Initial System Wide Information Management (SWIM)- comprising standards, infrastructure and governance enabling the management of information and its exchange between operational stakeholders via interoperable services.

Combined, these initiatives will allow the management of air traffic in Europe to be smarter, interoperable, safer, more resilient, and more environmentally sustainable.
