Solar cells represent a key technology supporting the green transition, but growing demand and ongoing innovation create bottlenecks in production chains. The EU-funded LUMINOSITY project addresses these challenges by improving efficiency and sustainability through novel materials and technologies, in particular flexible perovskite solar cells (PSC). It uses aluminium-based foil with fluorinated tin oxide electrode layers to expand the process window and introduces innovations across the value chain.
GOALS AND RESULTS
LUMINOSITY develops next-generation flexible perovskite solar technology and brings it closer to real-world use through scalable roll-to-roll manufacturing. The project supports the transition from laboratory research to industrial production of lightweight, high-efficiency solar modules.
Recent results include progress toward real applications of flexible solar foils in building-integrated photovoltaics, including curved and roof-shaped elements. In parallel, related demonstrations such as TNO’s perovskite solar roof tile show how this technology can be integrated directly into building materials, achieving promising efficiencies while remaining flexible and suitable for large-scale production.
Together, these developments point toward solar solutions that are lighter, more adaptable, and easier to integrate into roofs, façades, and infrastructure. This supports more widespread use of solar energy in cities and buildings, contributing to a faster and more sustainable energy transition in Europe.
