LOCOMOTION: Paving the Way to a Sustainable Tomorrow

The world is facing from heat waves, with biodiversity being massively affected. Global warming is driving us to unexpected situations, making climate change an undeniable reality.

Horizon 2020 - Locomotion

Civil society and policymakers are looking for sustainable alternatives for a low-carbon, net-zero emissions future.

In response to this pressing need, the LOCOMOTION project, funded by Horizon 2020, has successfully concluded a four-year journey lighting the path towards a sustainable, climate-neutral future.

What is WILIAM?

At the heart of LOCOMOTION lies WILIAM, an innovative system dynamics model designed to steer climate and environmental policymaking. Through WILIAM’s development, the project enhances transparency, realism, and acceptance of different policy scenarios. Serving as a reliable and practical tool, WILIAM facilitates the rigorous assessment of sustainability policies aimed to achieve a low-carbon future.

Thanks to partners’ commitment, the version 1.3 of WILIAM has recently been released. Despite the conclusion of LOCOMOTION project in November 2023, their final efforts have yield different types of improvements spanning conceptual, technical, computational, and usability aspects.

A special effort has been devoted to refining the model’s usability, by polishing and upgrading the structure, documentation, and data. WILIAM now includes over 90 functional policies and hypotheses, facilitating the test of a wide array of scenarios. Additionally, an enriched portfolio of indicators streamlines the analysis of their implications.

LOCOMOTION's impact extends beyond academia, providing stakeholders with an effective, user-friendly, and open-source modeling system for decision support, education, and social awareness. As we celebrate LOCOMOTION's success, we also acknowledge the strides made toward a more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally conscious future.
