Horizon Energy: JustWind4All - Accelerating wind at the European Sustainable Energy Week

13 June 2024, 11:30-13:00 CEST EUSEW wind session

The EU needs to accelerate the implementation of clean, affordable and secure renewable energy, such as wind, to reach its 2030 and 2050 climate and energy targets. However, national implementation of wind energy has not been fast enough due to technical, social and environmental obstacles.

At the 2024 European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), JustWind4All is hosting a policy session with Horizon Europe Sister project, WIMBY, titled, “The answer is in the wind: the Accele-RES initiative for a holistic approach to wind power.” The session will discuss the Wind Power Action Plan’s Accele-RES Initiative aim to ease implementation challenges by fast-tracking permitting with the designation of Renewables Acceleration Areas (RAA). Our diverse panelists from industry, environmental NGOs, regional government and community energy advocates will consider how RAAs can be a valuable tool if they are designed well and ensure greater coordination between spatial planners and local stakeholders.

This session will further enrich the energy policy agenda by focusing on the inclusive collaboration of community and environmental voices to embed justice into the RAA process to explore the challenges and opportunities for member states to designate and implement Accele-RES for on and offshore wind energy in a holistic way for and with citizens, ensuring community and nature benefits.

Please join the EUSEW session on June 13 from 11:30-13:00 CEST in Brussels at the Martin’s Hotel Quartz room or online. Register for EUSEW here and read more about our session here.

JustWind4All is a Horizon Europe project which aims to support the acceleration of on- and offshore wind energy through just and effective governance, by tackling key challenges identified by the project’s consortium: Knowledge gaps, Justice deficit, Unsuitable policy frameworks, and Unlocking novel resources. JustWind4All uses a trans- and interdisciplinary approach that combines social-ecological holistic impact assessment with techno-economic modelling to assess a variety of social, environmental, technical, and economic impacts and benefits to improve decision-making.
